Today our Samajam is one of the most reputed socio-cultural organizations having more than 3500 members who are diverse professionls to name a few, entepreneuers, educationists, professors, lawyers, teachers, information technology, real estate, hospitality, Accounts, Banking, finance,print and Electronic mass media, medical and paramedical, yoga, martial arts, music and dance,etc.
The post independence scenario opened up new avenues for the younger generation of Kerala to venture out of the state seeking better opportunities to enhance their livelihood.
A large number of them settled in Borivli. Some of them started meeting together and intereacted regularly on holidays and Sundays and exchanged their views on various subjects including bringing all Malayalees of Borivli together (under one umbrella).
These meetings and interactions culminated into forming
The BorivliTalukaMalayaleeSamajam (BTMS) on 7.7.1961.
BTMS was officially inaugurated on 2nd December 1961 by (late) Shri. V.K. Krishna Menon, one of the great Indian Diplomats and illustrious Malayalee, at a function held in Gopalji Hamraj High School, Borivli East, Mumbai, Later the Samajam was renamed as THE BORIVLI MALAYALEE SAMAJAM and got Registered under The Societies Registration Act 1860 (vide Registration No BOM/125/68/GBBSD) and The Public Trust Act ( vide Registration Certificate No. F/1781/BOM) by the Charity Commissioner, Mumbai with the main aims and objects of providing
1. Education
2. Medical relief
3. Yoga
4. Relief of poverty.
5. Advancement of any other object of general public utility.
For years together, Franciscan Missionary Brothers of Borivli, St. Francis D’Assisi High School and St. Francis ITI helped the Samjam In its development and conducting different activities of the Samajam at their premises at free of cost upto the time Samajam shifted to its own school complex in the lease-hold land. In 1975 Samajam’s own office was inaugurated at Mathura Vihar, S.V.P. Road, Borivli West, Mumbai 400092.
It was our founders’ thought process to make aware of the different activities of the samajam to literary and educational institutions in Mumbai and its suburbs nay outside Mumbai. As a prelue to this -On 27.7. 1975 Sucessfully conducted First meeting of Discussion Group - Literary Initiative of Samajam, In 1980 Open Shuttle Badminton Tournament was organised. This is the first time such tournament was initiated.To inculcate painting amongst the school children/pupil on 17.10.1982 first Inter-School Painting competition for all schools situated between Borivli and Dahisar was organised. Around 400 students participated in the competition.
Encouraging sports amongst all, is always been a priority for the samajam. Keeping this in view on 15.11.1982 the first Inter-School Sports Meet for all schools situated between Bandra and Borivli was organised. Followed by first Inter-School Elocution Competition in English,Hindi and Marathi languages for all schools of Borivli and Dahisar on 19.12.1982.
On 29. 5. 1983 Samajam thrown open KavitaSayanam inviting participants from all over Mumabi. The KavitaSayanam was a grand success.
An AksharaSlokam Competition for participants from all Mumbai basis was conducted on 16.10.1983 which was appreciated applauded by Malayalees of Mumbai.
Samajam organised and conducted on 30.9.1984, first ever Free Cardiac Check-up Camp under Dr. K.G. Nair and Dr.K.R. Shetty. In that camp 225 patients attended..
Silver Jubilee celebrated by the Samajam on 6th and 7th Dec 1986 with pomp and pageantry. In addition to customary regular events and programmes, ganamela by Padmashree K.J.Yesudas on 6.12.1986. On 7.12.1986 celebrations ShriThakazySivansankara Pillai was the Chief Guest.
Organised First Inter- School Arts and Crafts Exhibition from 26th to 28th December 1986. To propagate Fine Arts for the benefit of the Members, under the auspices of the Samajam, The Borivli Fine Arts Society was inaugurated on 4.12.1988 by Shri Sunil Dutt.. In the function Padmashree K.J.Yesudas presented a Carnatic Vocal Recital.
The Year 1989 opened another chapter for the Samajam in that ‘BorivliDignostic Centre’ was inaugurated by PadmashreeDr. B.K. Goyal. In this centre 12 Eminent doctors specialized in different branches of medicines provided medical services to the members and the general public. The Registration fee for consultation was very nominal.
On the occasion of Birth Centenary of late Shri V.K. Krishna Menon, V.K. Krishna Menon Memorial Lecture was organised on 12.11.1995, Chief Guest being Shri K.P. Unnikrishnan and key-note address by Retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer.
During the Fund Raising Programmes of the Samajam in 1996 Super Star Shri Mohan Lal was the Chief Guest while on 14.11.1997 programme Film Star Shri Jayram graced the occasion as Chief Guest.
It is the dream of the Samajam to have its own land for its various activities. With the support of the Managing Committee and due to the untiring, persuasive, tremendous contiunusconsistant hard work and follow up of Shri A.K.G. Nair, Shri M.Vijayaraghavan and late Shri N.C. Jishnu with BrihanmumbaiMahanagarpalika, the dream come true on 17.9.2001 when Samajam took possession from BM of the reserved school plot admeasuring about 6,725.90 aquare meters – 4000 square meters for school and 2725 square meters for play ground situated at New MHB Colony, Borivli West, Mumbai 400092.
The Foundation Stone for the V.K.Krishna Menon Academy was laid on 17.8.2003 by the then Honourable Union Minister for Human Resources, Shri MuraliManhar Joshi in the presence of Shri Ram Naik, the then Member of Parliament and the the Union Minister for Petroleum.
V.K. Krishna Menon Academy started Functioning on 27.6. 2004 from a rented premises in New MHB Colony, Borivli West Mumbai 400092.
Samajam Celebrated Golden Junbilee on11.2.2012. During the occasion , His Excellency, the then Governor of Mahashtra Shri K. Sankaranarayanan was the Chief Guest while the Guest of Honour was late Shri K.A.Ommen, the first President of the Smajam. Dr.Shyam Agarwal, Shri M.P. Ramachandran, Chirman and Managing Director of Jyothi Laboratories Ltd and Shri D.S. Rasul – Oscar Ward Winner were also present at the celebrations.
Presently Samajam looks after all its affairs, except Ayurvedic Centre and the Dignostic Centre from its own building/complex situated at the plot of land leased to the Samajam by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.
This has become possible by the relentless hard work of all the past and the present Committee Members including Presidents, Vice Presidents, Hon. Gen. Secretaries, Joint Secretaries, Hon. Treasurers and the Joint Treasurers.’
The Samajam continue to conduct almost all past events and competitions in addition to participating in various cultural programmes arranged zone-wise and region-wise for the benefits of members and their children.
